FIFTEEN

Further examination suggested that the area containing the statuary had been closed off until recently. Debris had gathered in a clear line where a section of wall must have rolled back when I accepted the quest or when we came through the gate. Six of the gods had an inset Keystone, and the other six were missing theirs, which suggested that each branch of Nonag’s Castle contained one of these quest items in addition to the normal completion requirements.

“Okay,” I said, “ready to do a dungeon crawl?”

Haggitha shrugged. “I’m here.”

The chambers were color coded, but they didn’t have to be accessed in any particular order, except that there was an item in the Black Chamber that was necessary for the fulfillment of two of the others, so we tackled that one first. It was a long tube of volcanic glass with the faintest of illumination generated by purplish veins of mana trapped in the obsidian walls. A dais to our right supported a lone unlit torch, always a hint for these kinds of challenges, which I used my Elemental Control to light.

As soon as the torch was burning, a path of glowing violet bricks rose out of the floor. Trying to proceed on foot without them would have triggered any number of traps and spawns, but that wouldn’t have been an obstacle for me in any case. I flew across as Haggitha played out the platformer section in this part of the dungeon.

“Ignore the chest,” I said. “It’s a decoy.”

The path was on a timer, and if you didn’t reach the end before the torch winked out again, you’d drop to trap level and that would be a massive bother. Haggitha reluctantly bypassed the chest I had pointed out. It was placed specifically to steal time from players on the clock, and contained random Mortal-tier item drops, pretty disappointing for a reward set from a high-level dungeon.

At the far end of the lava tube was a pair of torches that needed to be lit to reveal a more desirable chest sitting atop a nearby pillar. This one had random drops as well, a mediocre hammer and a handful of gems, but more significantly, a pair of Golden Gloves that we needed for later in the dungeon.

All that was left was a locked door that Haggitha disarmed with an exquisite set of thieves’ tools I had never seen her use before. This saved me the trouble of locating yet another hidden path and fixing the damaged lever that normally activated the door.

The next room contained a few lootable jars and a floating purple sphere that represented one of the seals trapping the spirit of Nonag in the castle. It was protected by a damaging magical barrier that I slit with my atreanum knife before tossing in a bomb to shatter the seal. The enchantments governing the castle would cause the seal to reform within about an hour, so we had that long to complete the main quest or we would have to start over.
